Flu suspected in 5-year-old Brooklyn girl’s death

A 5-year-old girl who died after falling ill in her Brooklyn home may be the fourth young victim of the flu this winter.

Medics rushed the young victim from her apartment in Canarsie’s Bay View Houses on Shore Parkway near E. 102nd St. to Brookdale University Hospital just after 10 p.m. Saturday, FDNY officials said. She died at the hospital, and city Health Department officials are investigating whether she succumbed to the flu, sources told the Daily News.

“The lady opened her door and she started screaming, saying that her daughter wasn’t breathing, so I came and called 911,” a neighbor told NBC News 4.

City Health Department officials have confirmed the deaths of three children from flu, including an 8-year-old girl from Queens.

The city saw six flu-related child deaths in the 2016-2016 influenza season, officials said.
