Inside The Wiggles’ Emma and Lachlan’s troubled marriage

Married life for The Wiggles’ Emma Watkins and Lachlan Gillespie did not live up to their expectations and and they grew apart in the months leading up to their split, friends have supposedly claimed.

Emma, 28, and Lachlan, 32, announced their separation after just two years of marriage earlier this month, releasing a statement claiming they would continue to perform together but had ‘chosen a different path to travel in [their] personal lives’.

And on Monday, a source close to the former couple claimed that ‘cracks started to appear almost immediately’ in their relationship after they tied the knot in April 2016.

‘I think Em wanted the marriage for such a long time that it was always going to be hard to live up to the dream. Ultimately, the fairytale just didn’t match up with the reality,’ a ‘friend’ told Woman’s Day magazine.

According to pals, Emma and Lachlan didn’t have much of a honeymoon period after getting married because The Wiggles’ busy touring schedule prevented them from taking a holiday.

And in the two years since their wedding day at at Hopewood House in Bowral, the couple’s relationship became ‘strained’ as performance duties took over their lives.

Furthermore, the publication alleged Lachlan struggled ‘to keep the romance alive’ in their relationship and Emma’s painful battle with endometriosis also took its toll.

Emma was the one to initiate the ‘trial separation’ around February this year, Woman’s Day claimed, with a source adding that she had grown distant from her husband and began to see him as ‘more like a brother’.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted The Wiggles’ representatives for comment.

Two weeks ago, a friend of Lachlan’s claimed he was ‘absolutely heartbroken’ by the end of his marriage to Emma.

An insider told The Sunday Telegraph: ‘He was completely besotted by Emma and worshipped her and still does.

‘He tried absolutely everything to make it work, but in the end, he couldn’t. His heart has been broken.’

It comes after a video of the couple discussing their engagement in 2016 resurfaced, in which Emma suggested Lachlan was less keen than she was to begin a relationship.

In the clip, from the Tea With Jules YouTube series, Emma revealed that she fell in love with Lachlan the first day she met him, however it took him longer to develop feelings.

‘I have always loved Lachlan, since the very day I met [him]. It’s taken Lachlan a long time,’ she said.

Lachlan awkwardly replied: ‘I liked you too, it’s just…’

Emma then went on to explain that working together on the road was tough and the lovebirds had ‘dwindled’ into their engagement.

‘You become so close, and you work so closely together, that we already had such a good relationship before we dwindled into becoming engaged,’ she said.

Lachlan and Emma had secretly dated for two years before finally going public with their romance in March 2015.

Just two months later, they became engaged when Lachlan popped the question on Sydney Harbour.

Emma and Lachlan married in April 2016 at Hopewood House in Bowral, New South Wales in front of around 200 guests.

At the time, she described the ceremony as ‘the best day of [her] life’.

Earlier this year, Emma revealed her secret battle with endometriosis – a painful condition that occurs when the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows outside of it.

In April, she underwent surgery to address her endometriosis. She claimed at the time the operation ‘went well’.

Endometriosis can cause infertility in some women, however friends told Woman’s Day this week that fertility issues were not a factor in the couple’s decision to split.

Lachlan and Emma confirmed their shock split on Friday 3 August.

In a statement, the pair said they had ‘been navigating through a trial separation’ for the past six months before deciding to go their separate ways.

The former couple added that they will continue to perform together in The Wiggles but had ‘chosen a different path to travel in [their] personal lives’.
