Sterling Shepard was a surprise inactive for the Giants’ Week 7 home game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon with a left ankle sprain that now has sidelined him two straight weeks.
Shepard was optimistic this week that he would return from the injury he suffered in Week 5 against the Chargers, to the same ankle he had injured in the preseason. And NFL Network even reported definitively on Sunday morning that he would play.
That would have been a big boost for the Giants (1-5), who lost both Odell Beckham and Brandon Marshall for the season in Week 5 and completed only two passes to receivers in their Week 6 win in Denver.
Shepard, though, will sit at least until after the Giants’ Week 8 bye. He was joined on the Week 7 inactive list by center Weston Richburg (concussion), defensive end Olivier Vernon (ankle), running back Paul Perkins (ribs), linebackers Jonathan Casillas (neck) and Calvin Munson (quad) and quarterback Davis Webb (healthy scratch).
